Sited on a steep slope at the edge of a lake, the design of this new deck extends the main floor of a 1970s split level house to the outside, creating an exterior living room surrounded by the tree canopy of hemlocks. At its seasonal peak, the deck becomes a platform for outdoor living, with views to the lake. The lower deck mediates between the lake activities of swimming, kayaking, canoeing and the property, while an elevated enclosed outdoor shower connects the lower and upper decks, reinforcing the action between the participants and water.
