OMAS:WORKS is an Architecture studio created by us, Carl Muehleisen & Brian O’Brian. It originated as an idea while we were students in 1997. Initially conceived as O’Brian Muehleisen Architecture Studio, we quickly began assigning various explanations to the acronym, most notably “organizing massive amounts of stuff.” Two years would pass before we formally convened with Work 1: Manifesto, 1999. The early Works were primarily studies, explorations and experimentations during our apprenticeships, moonlighting under the simple corporation called Omas Workshop. Once licensed to practice Architecture in the State of New York in late 2006, the studio took to its original name O’Brian Muehleisen Architecture Studio, LLC. In mid-2010, Brian O’Brian expanded the practice across the US-Canada border, establishing a presence with a design and consultation practice in Toronto, Ontario. Forgoing the acronym, the office looked to the latitudes of each city, with New York being at the 41st parallel, and Toronto the 44th. The two offices were renamed OMAS41, and OMAS44, respectively. After four years, and on realizing that the focus is always the Work, the practice changed names again to OMAS:WORKS in 2014 with the colon representing the two offices and harkening back to the first corporate name.
WORK 32, a Carriage House in upstate New York, was the first undertaking for the full time practice of OMAS:WORKS in late 2006. Throughout the evolution of names, the investigation and rigorous attention to the Work has been maintained. All Work is sequentially organized and below is the full Catalogue of those Works to date. From 1999 to 2019, the practice jointly designed, in some fashion or another, 165 projects with a few outtakes, rarities and demos that weren’t officially assigned a dedicated number. Since 2019 the practice evolved and jetisoned into new directions and is no longering cataloguing jointly designed works, thus ending at 165. However the sequence of number assignments continues to identify projects at Brian’s current practice, Works Office of Brian O’Brian Architect, while Carl opts for prose and allegory at Carl Muehleisen Architecture.
