WEST SIDE APARTMENT
NEW YORK, NY
2012
This renovation to a newly constructed apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side is an exercise in implied boundaries. Leaving the existing location of the original rooms largely intact, our work stitches those spaces together by eliminating walls and employing operable planes and blades that open and imply spaces and closures behind the lofted living space. The simple notch joint used in wood joinery is embodied in the spatial plan between wall and ceiling. The shift in material changes illustrates the joint and occurs at the junction between concrete and wood, stone and wood and steel and wood.
